I shouldn't make cakes because I'm the only one who eats them. It is inevitable that I will eat every one of these delicious banana flapjacks and this entire carrot cake.

Despite being nominated as a good fat for cake-baking all over the internet, I'm afraid rapeseed oil does not work. Butter really is the one and only. Oil is just about doable if you have enough sugar. It's too flavoury otherwise. It's alright in spicy/fruity cakes, but the sugar-free sponge (failcake) I made a couple of months ago with honey and rapeseed oil was just WRONG. I think next time I'll try the sugar-free thing again, but with butter this time. I need to try sugar-free flapjacks too. Damnit, I WILL find a healthy sweet food!

Aaand Anna's just walked in the door with American chocolate for me - Reese's cups and a Butterfinger. Damnit. My teeth are screwed.

I never put butter in any cake I make, I use sunflower oil, always 1/4 of a glass. You can't taste it in the cake and the cake is much healthier.

Also, my dad is diabetic so I bake cakes with no sugar, but a sweetener (I can't remember the name of it though!). But the texture of the cake is slightly different...not the taste though!

Oooh yeah I have to try sunflower oil next actually. I bet that doesn't taste too weird. I'm scared of sweetener! I find they have odd aftertastes. :( I might try some sweetening with fruit juice as well at some point, figured that would be healthier than sugar.

It would be better if I could just get over my sweet addiction, haha!

Butter all the way for me :) Butter just has the flavour and the texture and do on. Oil is for dressings!

Nothing beats butter! I've rediscovered it lately, after always being told it was bad bad bad bad bad all my life. It's so niiice.

That is probably why I don't cook as much - nobody else would eat it. I quite like cooking though. I've just put on a pot of pumpkin soup which will probably be my lunch and dinner all weekend. Baking is fun though, amma get my cookie cutters out tomorrow :D

Haha yep, I do the same, I made some curry last week and had to freeze half of it 'cause there was too much. :D

I think the flavour of rapeseed oil is just to strong for cakes - we only use it for vinaigrettes in my house. Try finding an oil with less flavour like sunflower maybe??? But then ... I love cake made with butter a lot more! ;-)

It definitely is, I don't know why so many people seem to suggest it. Tut tut! Will be trying sunflower next. :D

I have the same problem with cakes!! just as if I buy them for several people... it'll be that ends up eating them...

... I love minirolls too much, and they keep doing special offers at my local co-op... it's not good...
