NB: I wrote all this, then was reminded that today is actually Showbiz's 10th birthday. How WEIRD.

Moar NBs: TOM KIRK. What a dude.

I threatened to do this the other day, and my Saturday sucked, so here it is! I was hoovering today, and listening to their new album for the 68th time, and it dawned on me that I've been into Muse for ten years. TEN. They're the only band who've managed to keep my attention for so long. I go on and off actually listening to tons of their music but I still keep up with their shenanigans and buy all their stuff without thinking about it. As I'm going through such a fangirly stage again at the moment (since Teignmouth and the release of The Resistance) I realised that I really should take some time to tell you why I love this ridiculous rock band so much. This damn band, who have given me TEN YEARS of good times, jolly adventures, and made me so many great friends. There are lots of links and I've tried to use lovely old Microcuts.tv for videos where I can, but most of it's from YouTube. I hope it doesn't get Warnered. So, here goes; 35 reasons why I think Muse are the only best greatest modern rock band ever in history since the Fifties.

1. When I discovered Muse I was into the Manics, the Crocketts, JJ72, the Super Furries, Rage and a whole load of nu-nu-metal. So, a nice blend of chilled and a bit more heavy. I went to see Muse knowing Showbiz (their first album), and I didn't quite know what to expect but it certainly wasn't what I saw. HAHAHA. Yeah. It went a little something like this (except Matt's hair was bright blue). That's not only three people, is it? They're nuts. I love them! Love at first riff.

2. Their music is a perfect blend of rock and melody. To me it's exactly what music should be. When I was trying to figure out what kind of music I wanted to make, bam - there goes Muse, getting it spot on. So much emotion. I like soaring melodies and energy and noise and chaos and omg. So yeah, best. I was in love with Showbiz. I was obsessed when I heard Origin. It's music in its purest form, surely? Haha. And I love the fact that the lyric/the 'message' is always secondary to the music. And that you can often tell *chuckle*.

3. Matthew Bellamy. Meerkat of Win. A total dork, really quite shy, awkward and fidgety. He never knows what to say, and trips over his words. I love that about him; the fact that he seems such an unlikely Rock Star. But then of course when he's on stage, he fuckin' owns it. OWNS. He owns the guitar and the piano and songwriting and... that voice though, mate. Nuts. He sings so softly, and then he screams like he's being torn apart. Metal as fuck. I love him and always will. To be honest, I'd buy his albums just because he has the world's most brilliant laugh.

4. Dom Howard. Blond and leathery. He of the Gay Trousers and Faff Bag. He's so hilarious. As soon as he starts speaking and makes those expressions, I'm laughing. He's just got SUCH a funny kind of deadpan way of talking. And he's possibly the only drummer to have gone onstage in a Spiderman outfit.

5. Christopher Wolstenholme. Muse bass is my favourite. Bass got me into Muse, so all of this is down to Chris. Such a brilliant musician. So reserved and quiet, but definitely the most metal. And he's so down to earth and lovely. He never says much at interviews, if he's even there, but when he does he says THE MOST PROFOUND STUFF. Talk moar, Chris.

6. You're going to diiie!

7. Their second album Origin of Symmetry is the only CD album I've had to buy again, three times, due to wear and tear. This means it's probably my most favourite album of all time.

8. Sit the FUCK DOWN!

9. Interviewer: "What's the greatest misconception people have about Muse?"
Matt: "That we're intelligent."
Interviewer: "And you're clearly not?"
Matt: "No. We're not."

10. I love how they consistently completely fail to capture on record how good they are live.

11. I heard the Stockholm Syndrome riff for the first time at Reading 2002. It was chucking it down with torrential rain, I had pink hairdye running into my eyes, and I was right down the front dancing my arse off. Best moment of any festival I've been to, ever. When I heard the completed song I instantly recognised it as the 'Reading Riff', and still sometimes call it that. In fact, I think I have a recording of it called 'Cool Riff Thing'. Just like I'm still inclined to call Apocalypse Please 'Emergency'. I love how we all knew Plug In Baby before it appeared on the album, and how we all knew Emergency and the Small Print before they appeared on Absolution. I love how loads of their songs come from live, impromptu jams like that. Because they were always on the road they had to pretty much rehearse new songs at big shows. I love that about them.

12. Micro Cuts from the Hullabaloo DVD (2002) is one of my favourite songs, falsetto all the way through, highest note in the breakdown, heavy as tits, so fucking BLINDING. I like this version best because of that damn scream before the second chorus (2:04). UNF. BRING THE NOISE.

13. Matt's Sex Face.

14. Stockholm Syndrome at Glastonbury (2004). OH MY DAYS. BEST. LIVE PERFORMANCE. EVER. OF ANY BAND. I wish I was there! And why the hell was DAT OUTRO cut from the DVD?!

15. Their extreme onstage antics. BUNDLE! I especially enjoy moments of Bellz vs drumz.

16. The Knights of Cydonia video. KOC in general, actually. Hilarious. Hearing a sample of that bit with the trumpet for the first time was a day of LOL. I didn't like a lot of Black Holes & Revelations, but there were still some great moments. And the gigs were still fantastic, even though Starlight and Invincible continue to be ideal for loo breaks... but anyway...

17. They have the funniest, most addictive messageboard in the whole of history. Like srsly, what would I have done without it? I could've achieved so much...

18. Earls Court 2004. 'Nuff said. I was RIGHT at the back dancing with Dave and Leeps and we couldn't see anything but I had SUCH a goddamn good time. Ruled by Secrecy in particular stands out. I cried like a massive crying... thing. And TSP too. Screamy <3

19. Forced In in Bournemouth, 2003. Stunning. And Reading 2006, although that wasn't as good.

20. Fucking Cave in fucking Teignmouth!

21. The TIRO shuffle!

22. I generally love the fact that people imagine them to be this stuck-up, pompous bunch of gits who take themselves too seriously. In fact, they're a bunch of absolute numpties.

23. Check out this riff.

24. DID I MENTION BASS. YES.

25. You fucking motherfucker!

26. The setlist anagram treasure hunts and more recent missions. Inspired. And how cute was 'Messageboard Song'? :D AWWW. So much fun.

27. The first band to sell out the new Wembley Stadium, twice. Their little faces when they were on that stage! New Born's blistering outro. Best.

28. If you get Muse on your TV show, don't tell them not to swear.

29. If you get Muse on your festival bill, don't ask them to sing live to playback (see Chris & Dom have swapped places on the picture, ahaha.)

30. Matt & Dom's epic bromance. :D

31. If you get Muse on your TV show, don't ask them to mime.

32. Ummm, no I definitely wouldn't ask them to mime.

33. Y'know, songs and stuff.

34. Moments like this.

35. Friends like you. :)

that's the biggest thing about muse for me, that i've met so many caring, lovely people who have consistently gone out of their way for me. both in new zealand and in the UK.

YES. Heehee. I'm grateful to them for so many things, but the biggest thing was making me realise that there's a whole world of amazing people out there.
:'( I'm crying now, damnit.

Yeah, the best thing about Muse has been the sense of community that has developed between the fans. I never thought that I'd be friends with as many people as I am now just from joining a message board. They might be utter gash these days but I still love ;em to bits ^_^

I wanted to add more reasons to love them but I think I covered most points. :D

As a Northern bloke it's about as soppy as I'm going to get! I'm thinking about trying to get a ticket for one of the gig dates if I can get my mitts on some wonga...possibly even Limoges. I'd be well up for doing a drive down there to a gig! I might even try borrow my mum's fake campervan, haha!

OMG. If you do, I might do it too. Would be immense. I have to be back by the 5th though 'cause I'm seeing Depeche Mode. Hahaha!

If I can't get around to doing it (I still need to renew my passport, and that could take me out of it, chuffing £80!) then I think it's definitely a foreign festival summer next year...Werchter, Rock Am Ring, Benicassim...would love to do all of those!

Oh mate I said the other day that I often feel like the black sheep of the world, and it was meant as a lol but it's kinda true. YES, I AM THAT EMO. But we all have this one thing in common, this damn music, and it's all that matters, to me anyway. Sharing love of something that important with people you might not otherwise have even spoken to... it's so weird, and really amazing.

I've never met you Maysie even though we were both in Teignmouth (lolwot I failed so much at Muser-hunting that day and I dunno why - damn town wasn't that big!) but I think you're awesome, dunno why people have beef with you tbh. x

it all depends how you feel at that very moment tomorrow you could feel so different to how you feel right now ect
also for me it don't help living alone and my shyness to add people to lj ect cos of the beef in the past from folks :\
but yes it is odd we do all love muse in someway at the end of the day music and in a funny way the band themselfs

yeah i missed SO many friends in teignmouth and that place is tiny! so it happens haha XD
awe thank you gemsy :D i think you are bloody awesome too!
well you know if we all got on etc i'm just very childish at times and i just get too silly and stupid people don't like it *shrug*

as the lovely [livejournal.com profile] unbrokenreality said to me "never be sorry about being you"
shes right :)

I could probably add so many more things now, and make it 50. Haha. I might do that tomorrow. :D
